7.2% more borrowed from banks for real estate projects

14 Φεβρουαρίου 2017

On 7 February 2017, the Central Bank of Luxembourg issued its interim report on the amount of the balance sheets of the credit institutions in Luxembourg.

Between December 2015 and December 2016, they recorded a 2.3% increase in the amount of credit granted, for all types of loan combined.

But for real estate loans, the increase was 7.2% in one year or 1,738 million euros borrowed.

This seems logical given the exceptionally low borrowing rates experienced in 2016.

Even though the number of mortgages contracted is not known, one can conclude without being too mistaken that many households have had to take advantage of the low rates to build, buy or renovate their homes and/or that the amounts borrowed should be more significant to compensation for the lower interest amounts.
