The EU Mission is a program set up by the European Union which aims to accompany 100 cities towards climate neutrality by 2030.

This program is a direct result of the Paris Accords, which aim to cut CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. According to the EU, large cities are the priority areas for improvement and must evolve rapidly to achieve full climate neutrality in the EU. Indeed, occupying only 4% of the EU surface, cities are home to 75% of European citizens and are therefore significant sources of CO2 emissions. The selected cities will thus act as "centers of experimentation and innovation" to enable all European cities to follow their example by 2050.

Officially published on April 28, the list of 100 cities selected for the program includes only one Luxembourg city: Differdange. The municipality must now create a “climate contract” including all the actions that will be carried out to achieve the climate neutrality objectives in all the sectors concerned: energy, buildings, waste management and transport. This contract will have to be co-created with key local players in each sector and the citizens of the city.

To create this contract, Differdange will have to rely on local stakeholders in the different sectors listed above, on the citizens of the city, and on the mission platform managed by NetZeroCities.

Concerning real estate, we can think that future housing built in the municipality will be ecologically neutral and eco-designed. We may see new ways of building houses or more sustainable materials. Thanks to the EU Mission, Differdange will become one of the first Smart Cities in Luxembourg.

In total, 360 million euros will be spent by Europe between 2021 and 2023 to finance research and innovation actions related to the EU Mission.
