In which parts of Luxembourg do the non-Luxembourger populations live?
30 Ιουνίου 2017
A study carried out by the University of Luxembourg and LISER and published by STATEC in June 2017 focused on the location of foreign populations in the Grand Duchy, which represent nearly 48% of its inhabitants.
Among them, about 80% were born abroad and immigrated to Luxembourg. As a reminder, the Portuguese community makes up the largest portion of foreigners, followed by the French and the Italians. But with 170 different nationalities, the foreign populations remain very diverse within the Grand Duchy.
In 2011, at the time of the last census, 65% of the inhabitants who were not Luxembourger lived in Luxembourg-Ville and the nearby cities. There was also a very large density in the communities of Petange, Differdange and Esch-sur-Alzette in the South and Echternach, Beaufort, Larochette, Ettelbruck and Wiltz in the North.
On the other hand, it was in the rest of the country that Luxembourgers were the best represented. In the capital, only 35% of the population was Luxembourger.
The study also showed a certain geographic concentration of foreign populations.
For example, in 2011, it appeared that the Portuguese were most concentrated in the extreme southwest of the country as well as in the northeast above Luxembourg-Ville and along the German border.
The French were mainly concentrated in the middle of the country and more in the southern part of the capital.
The Italians were mostly in the middle, the West and the South.
And as no surprise, the Belgians and the Germans chose mainly to live at the doors of their countries of origin, along the borders between Luxembourg and Belgium and Germany, respectively.
