Moving is always a big step, requiring organization, a minimum amount of equipment, and above all, time. Yet everyone always wonders before deciding to move into a new space: when is the best time of the year to do it?
Summer is the high season for moving
We don't always have the choice, and in Luxembourg as elsewhere, the summer season sees the highest number of moves. Of course, there are some advantages to this: many Luxembourgians leave the area and it's easier to drive around on the roads and to find parking.
Also, the weather is particularly mild, excluding major heat waves, and the days are longer than in the winter.
Finally, in order to meet high demand in the market, the housing offer is greater during this time. This is explained by the high number of departures coinciding with the end of the school year.
Moving in the summertime can be complicated
Still, the period between July and September isn't necessarily the easiest time, unlike other school holidays, especially spring break. By scheduling your move for the summer, you're always at the risk of it falling during a heat wave.
Furthermore, it's hard to get children to participate in the move itself: boxes are usually heavy, and most parents prefer to leave children at the house, which involves additional sitting costs.
Finally, since this is the high season, moving services and vehicle rentals are usually more expensive than in the rest of the year.
A few tips for a successful move
For your move to go smoothly, you need to plan things out in advance, making a thorough checklist two or three months ahead:
Concretely organize the move and compare prices for professional services, asking for quotes for movers and from agencies renting cars, trucks, and vans. Save money by asking friends and families as far in advance as possible;
Make an accurate inventory of important documents (bills, school files, etc.), and then, one week ahead, gather them together in boxes so you won't lose them;
One month ahead, book someone to look after your children;
Take the time to package your belongings, beginning two weeks ahead, writing the corresponding rooms on the boxes;
Get organized to have your pets looked after during the moving time: moving always causes stress, especially with cats and dogs;
Verify and reserve a parking space with the city you're moving from and the one you're moving to in order to avoid any incidents with pedestrians, neighbors, or the police;
When moving in, unpack your boxes in their corresponding rooms to save time.
