The heat wave of the past few days calls for important changes in behaviour in order to avoid suffering too much from the heat. Here are some tips to protect your home and to register those around you who are at risk on the watch lists of the Luxembourg Red Cross.
Protecting your home from heatwaves
Here are some good reflexes to adopt during a heatwave:
- Open your windows fully early in the morning and create drafts to help the air circulate inside your home.
- Close your shutters and your windows as soon as the temperature begins to rise.
- Reopen your windows at the end of the evening when the air becomes more breathable.
- If you can, leave your windows open at night.
You can also disconnect all electrical appliances that you do not use and which can become hot (or even overheat) if the indoor temperature is high.
Finally, an old trick is to scatter pools of cold water across the house in order to freshen up the air.
Protecting people at risk
People who are frail, are 75 years of age or older, who live alone or together with a disabled person, who have limited mobility or who do not have an extensive support system are invited by the Ministry of Health to register on the monitoring lists set up within Luxembourg’s Heatwave Plan.
Please contact the Luxembourg Red Cross about this subject.
