Luxembourg: 50.7% houses, 49.3% apartments

August 11, 2017

The new STATEC report in July 2017 shows the stock of houses and buildings in the territory of Luxembourg as of March 1, 2017.

So far, there were almost as many dwellings in the form of apartments just as houses in Luxembourg: Approximately 118,400 registered single-family homes
81,800 housing units in apartment buildings and 33,500 housing units in semi-residential buildings.

Therefore, houses logically represent the largest volume of buildings (82.9%), compared to 17.1% of buildings, which have more "vertical" housing units.

STATEC also finds that in recent decades, the share of newly built single-family homes has been decreasing in favor of the construction of buildings, which makes it possible to increase the volume of available housing.

This is also the latest strategy of the Luxembourg Government. They seek to optimize the available land space to build upwards, so as to provide more housing. The objective is to reduce the gap between supply and demand which increases the real estate prices in the country.
