Preparing your move
May 22, 2019
Are you planning to move soon or during the summer months? Here are some tips for a successful move. The key word is organization!
Remember to collect boxes to store all your belongings. Supermarkets and various stores regularly throw them away. You can ask them to put a few aside for you. Take the opportunity to sort your belongings when you fill up the boxes. Only bring what you need, and throw or give away anything that is no longer useful to you.
Remember to write down on your boxes what they hold, as well as in which room they will have to be placed. And, to spare the muscles of the people who will be helping you, avoid filling your boxes to the brim and balance them by distributing their weight.
Remember to measure your furniture before moving in, so as not to have any bad surprises if they do not fit through the door of your new home.
Finally, note that moves are in full swing from May to September. During this period, calling on a moving professional may result in a hefty bill, which would swell even more during the weekend. Try to plan your move on a week day, if possible.
To avoid these costs, call on your circle of friends. Offer them a meal and/or some snacks, or some comfort food during and after their efforts.
If you are renting, start by establishing the state of the premises, if it has not already been done. Don’t forget to check the various meters and to inform the previous residents and the energy suppliers of their status, so you avoid any unpleasant surprises.
These formalities done, don’t forget to make your change of address official with the various social, administrative and banking organizations, as well as with your employer. Also make sure to finish a mail redirection request to make sure that your mail doesn’t get lost between your two homes.
