The ideal temperature at home should vary and not be the same in every room. While, in general, the practice is to maintain a temperature of about 20 degrees at home, in reality, this is not the perfect solution for all environments. So, let's explore together how to set the ideal temperature at home based on the room and activities taking place (using thermostatic valves on radiators to autonomously manage the temperature).

WHO Recommendations

The World Health Organization indicates that the ideal temperature at home should be between 19 and 21 degrees. This is a general guideline, and it does not mean it should not be adapted to different needs. Last year, for example, to address the energy emergency, competent authorities had imposed a one-degree reduction in public offices and adjusted the time frames for heating system activation.

The Right Temperature Room by Room

In each room, different activities take place, requiring different temperatures. In the kitchen, for example, the temperature can be 18/19 degrees, as the use of stoves and ovens increases the temperature. In the bedroom, it shouldn't exceed 18 degrees, and optionally, it could be set around 16 degrees.

In the bathroom, where we take a shower or bathe, considering exceeding 20 degrees and setting the temperature to 21 degrees is possible, while in the living room, where we relax and are typically seated on the sofa to read a book or watch a movie, the ideal temperature is the classic 20 degrees. If the house has a laundry room where laundry and ironing are done, a lower temperature can be set, similar to the kitchen, due to the presence of the iron. The same applies if there's a room used for exercise: movement increases body temperature, and it's recommended not to set the heating to high temperatures. Opposite considerations apply to spaces dedicated to study or office work, where one may sit for long periods in front of a computer: it's better to ensure a temperature of 20 degrees.
