The smoke detector, prevention first and foremost

December 19, 2018

For your safety and to prevent any risk of fire, consider installing smoke detectors.

Starting January 1, 2019, all new housing in Luxembourg must be equipped with smoke detectors.
However, a 5-year extension will be granted for existing housing.

This measure taken by the State was heavily inspired by neighboring countries (France and Belgium) and their laws regarding smoke detectors, which have been required in Belgium since 2005 and in France since 2016.

To support residents in the application of this law, an awareness campaign called "It watches over you: the smoke detector" has been started. It is based on four points:

1. The provision of one free smoke detector per household with an explanatory notice
2. The development of a website with detailed information (www.rauchmelder.lu )
3. The creation of an email address for direct contact with the people (info [at] rauchmelder [dot] lu)

4. The production of an explanatory video

The smoke detectors will be distributed with the support of several stakeholders, including Luxembourg's 102 communes, fire stations and emergency services, the Government IT Center, and the prevention group of the Administration of Emergency Services.

Every household will receive a voucher in the mail that can be exchanged for a smoke detector from their commune of residence, Guichet.lu, or the Ministry of the Interior.

Please be advised that if you would like to purchase more smoke detectors, you must make sure they are EN 14604 certified and bear the initials CE.
