Build a secret room in your house
30 de junio de 2022
Having a hideout in your house can be fun, practical and even safe. Indeed, although it is usually a child's dream, a secret space can allow you to store valuable items away from prying eyes. Your hidden room could become your wine cellar, a relaxation room, a safe or your work space: the limit is only your imagination!
To keep your secret well kept, choose a room that has no view from the outside. The cellar, the attic or a large storage space under the stairs will do the trick! If you don't have a confined room, choose a room in your house that is discreet enough with limited traffic. An office, a laundry room or a bedroom could be suitable.

If you are building a new house or have bought an old one, and want to add a secret room, don't forget to report this to the authorities and your insurance company. If the room does not obtain an official status, you will not get compensated in case of any damages.
There are many ways to keep your hideout well hidden in your house.
If you enjoy reading spy stories or watching such films, the famous retractable bookcase is ideal for you! It opens manually or via a mechanism - with a book, for example - and will perfectly hide your secret room thanks to its large size.
If you don't like the solid appearance of the bookcase, you can opt for a smaller piece of furniture that hides the secret door, such as a shelf, a china cabinet or a cupboard with a fake cover at the bottom.
Alternatively, if access to your secret room is through the floor, you can cover it with a rug, a dining table or an armchair. You just have to find a piece of furniture big enough to cover the entire opening.
If you are not a do-it-yourself kind of guy and you can afford the required budget, it is good to know that there are companies which can do everything for you!
You could hire carpenters who will build your furniture to measure, electricians and plumbers who will connect the room to your electrical and water network and plasterers who will make the room partitions, complete with mouldings and cornices. Most municipalities in Luxembourg would require a construction permit for any extension or modification to your house. Remember to consult an architect who will prepare the plans required for you to build your precious “open sesame” room.
