Expat Guide – Energy Provider in Luxembourg: Water supply

8 de agosto de 2017

If gas and electricity are supplied by companies that you can choose, with regard to water, it is the water department of your future municipality of residence that will have to be contacted.

In Luxembourg, groundwater represents 2/3 of the drinking water requirement. In most parts of the country, tap water is safe to drink, unless there are warnings that only municipalities can specify. Contact them to make sure that you can consume tap water in your home.

In the Grand Duchy as elsewhere, saving drinking water becomes a necessity. To set an example, the Government has set up financial support for those who would like to be equipped with a rainwater recuperator. It may represent 25% of the investment, with a fixed ceiling of € 1,000. Find out all the conditions and procedures on the Government website.

But beyond this equipment, a few simple gestures allow considerable water savings for each household:

  • Turn off the tap when you are shaving or brushing your teeth (saves about 8 liters of water at each use)
  • Opt for dual flush toilets to avoid spilling 6 to 12 liters of water instead of 3 to 6 liters for a small need,
  • Opt for a shower instead of a bath, which consumes 2 times less water (or even more!),
  • Use new equipment: an old washing machine or an old dishwasher consumes up to 2 times more water than a latest appliance,
  • Quickly repair defective toilet flushing (loss of 25 liters per hour) or leaky taps (4 liters per hour).
  • Opt for washing dishes in the dishwasher and the car at the automated car washing stations,
  • Reuse the water in your aquarium to water your plants will save your drinking water, and it will also provide fertilizer to your plants with phosphorus and nitrogen that are released by your fish,
  • Try defrosting your food rather than thawing them under the tap,
  • Remember to stop automatic watering in the garden during rainy weather, and in case of heat, water them only in the early morning or late at night to limit the loss caused by evaporation.
