Prepare Your House For Winter

22 de noviembre de 2018

With cold and the winter season coming back, it is high time to prepare your home to go through this time without a hitch.

As the saying goes “prevention is better than cure” and this can also apply to your home: it is better to check and anticipate potential problems than to do some unexpected work that could later cost you dearly.

Outdoors: Roof and Garden

Take the time to look at your roof from the outside. This will allow you gauge at a glance if it is in good state or if your tiles have deteriorated. If this is the case, call upon a specialized company. Do not hesitate to clean, or have your gutters cleaned by removing any dead leaves that might be obstructing them.

As for the garden, do your pruning and brushing, and most of all make sure to store your summer equipment in order for it to be ready to use again in a few months.

Heating

Heating is obviously one of the essential elements of housing in winter. Special attention must be devoted to it. BE sure to have it serviced regularly by a professional. Indeed, good maintenance will prevent carbon monoxide poisoning or pipes giving way under pressure. It will also guarantee your security and optimize its performance.

Isolation

A well-insulated home is a home that limits heating consumption. As you know, the sensitive spots for insulation are at its openings.

The windows and doors should be checked, as caulking dries over time. However, be careful not to caulk everything as it may obstruct your windows’ ventilation grilles. Indeed, this practice prevents the air from circulating and can be dangerous. Even in winter, it is recommended to ventilate and air out your home.

The type of window also plays an important role in a home’s insulation. Going from a simple glazing to a double or even triple glazing will improve your situation and lighten your heating bill.

What’s more, if it is not furnished, your attic’s insulation should be checked in order to prevent any infiltration or damage caused by small animals.

Don’t wait for the big chill to act!
