Smoke detectors will soon be mandatory in your homes.

19 de enero de 2018

A new bill will be introduced which will make the installation of one smoke detector per dwelling mandatory in Luxembourg. Minister of the Interior Dan Kersch announced this bill as part of his wishes for the new year.

This requirement will apply to all new dwellings as of January 1, 2019. A period of five years will be provided for existing dwellings, to allow households time to install smoke detectors.

At least one detector per household is mandatory, but it is advisable install several smoke detectors in each dwelling, depending on the size of the property and the number of rooms.

It is important to place the detectors in strategic locations, including in the living room, bedrooms, hallways and stairways.

One place to avoid is the kitchen, because of the smoke usually caused by the oven and other methods of cooking.

The State plans to provide one smoke detector per home or 150,000 free of charge. Prices vary from 10 to 100 euros, depending on the brand and the features of the device.

In the meantime, keep in mind that it’s always important to ensure your safety at home. Fires are the leading cause of death in home accidents. Smartphones and other devices are often the origin of these fires.

Therefore, we recommended that you install this preventive tool before it becomes mandatory.
