About 50% of monthly household budget spent on housing

23 dicembre 2016

In December 2016, STATEC published its report on the budget needed to live comfortably in Luxembourg for 6 profiles of people: single men/women, couples, man/woman with 1 child aged 10-14 and couples with 2 children aged 10-14. How much does housing cost in Luxembourg?

Housing: more than 50% of the monthly budget for singles

According to the STATEC study, a single man aged 40-45 years old working full time would need €1,923 to live comfortably in Luxembourg, versus €1,909 for a single woman.

In both cases, housing (including the price of rent, electricity, heating and utilities) represents on average €1,049 per month, or 54.5% of the budget of a single man and 54.9% for a single woman.

Housing costs: how much for families?

For couples without children, the monthly budget is set at €2,600 to live as a couple in the Grand Duchy, and housing represents an amount of €1,231, or 47.3% of the total budget.

The cost of housing is barely higher for a man or woman living alone with a child aged 10-14. It represents €1,232 for respective budgets of €2,523 and €2,623 a month, or 48.8% and 47% of the total budget.

Finally, for couples living with two children aged 10-14, the monthly amount needed to live in proper conditions in Luxembourg is €3,935, and housing represents €1,469, or 37.3% of the total.

Through this study, STATEC wanted to fill out the indicators that will help to study poverty and inequality in the Grand Duchy. So do you agree with these figures? What portion does you housing budget represent in your total monthly expenses? Tell us in the comments or on our Facebook page.
