Housing in the Grand Duchy : towards optimising land resources
30 dicembre 2016
On December the 16th, the ministry of Housing published a press release on the « Collective Housing, Density and Height: a Luxembourg Perspective » conference organised by the ministry of Housing and the Luxembourg Center for Architecture (LUCA).
This conference aimed to launch a public debate on the densification of housing in Luxembourg, and especially vertical densification. Because it is not a secret, and it is more and more often present in our latest articles, that the Grand Duchy lacks housing, while the demand is rapidly increasing due to the very high migratory influx.
Given the size of the country, urban spreading is not an option. There is a need to build, but to build vertically, to optimise space and the number of habitants. The problem is the many prejudices, and therefore the objective of the ministry of Housing is to comfort the public opinion on high-rise buildings.
Optimising land resources has become essential for the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The migratory influx and the high economic growth are forcing the Luxembourg state to reflect upon appropriate urban development. But this reflection and solutions are already under way, as the Government has bought industrial wasteland to convert it into 1.500 homes.
