Coliving and shared accommodation continue to flourish in Luxembourg.

Coliving is the evolution of the classic roommate. It differs from the latter because the « colivers » are looking for an enriching life experience, while the roommates are looking to share costs.
Rising prices and the shortage of housing in Luxembourg, both for sale and for rent, are not unrelated to this phenomenon. STATEC estimates that there will be a shortage of 30,000 housing units in Luxembourg by 2021. Thus, some people who have difficulty finding accommodation in the Grand Duchy turn to coliving and shared accommodation, which are more economical solutions than individual accommodation. They also often have better value for money. Coliving/room sharing spaces are larger, better equipped and often well located .
Changes in consumption and lifestyle are also responsible for the success of collective housing. Simplicity and flexibility are often put forward to describe coliving. All administrative formalities and subscriptions (gas, electricity, internet, etc.) are included in the monthly rent. The coliving or shared apartments are very often furnished and maintained by the owners. This makes departures and arrivals easier, faster, and cheaper.
Finally, these two lifestyles are now better regulated than before. The first Luxembourg law legislating room sharing, determining criteria of health, safety and habitability entered into force in 2020.
Coliving and roommates are no longer the prerogative of students. According to Appartager.lu, 68% of its users in Luxembourg are employees, compared to only 25% of students.
