The Grand Duchy lacks housing. In spite of high prices, demand is greater than supply, which is forcing the Luxembourger government to find solutions in the housing market.

1,500 apartments coming

On 13 December, the government announced that 60 hectares of abandoned industrial buildings will be purchased by the Luxembourger government, then given over to real estate developers, sometimes for only a symbolic 1€ price tag, considering the costs of restoration on certain sites.

The purpose of this action is to convert unoccupied land and to transform it into nearly 1,500 apartments and 125,000 m² of commercial space. This represents about 3,000 individuals housed on Luxembourger soil.

Which sites are in play?

The construction of these 1,500 apartments will be carried out in various locations. The sites include the cities of Dudelange (on the site of the former rolling mill), Wiltz (on the former Circuit Foil "Haargarten" site), Petange (on the Eucosider site) and Belvaux (on agricultural land).

Esch-Lallange will also see 2 hectares of land developed into a new community center that will feature a fire station, a civil defense office and a Grand Duchy police station.

This is a necessary intervention carried out by the Luxembourger government which proves the willingness of the State to find solutions for housing as well as to find other uses for unused industrial facilities in the Grand Duchy.
