Expat guide : Learn to speak Luxembourgish

Luxembourgish is the national language of the Grand Duchy; 70.5%* of residents speak it, followed closely by French.
If you want to come and live in the country, or even come and work, it is recommended to learn how to speak the language of the country. Professionally speaking, this could be a real advantage on your résumé.

To do this, a certain number of learning tools is provided to foreigners who want to perfectly integrate into Luxembourg's society.

Luxembourgish courses

You can choose to take language courses in public or private schools, such as the University of Luxembourg, the National Language Institute, or even the "Adult education department of the Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth."

You can find all the courses given on the lifelong learning portal www.lifelong-learning.lu, or even on the website of the Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth, under the section "General interest courses."

Learn Luxembourgish online

You can learn Luxembourgish for free online through the QuattroPole City network from its website www.elearning.lu.

You can also view the site https://luxdico.wordpress.com and use the online translation dictionary.

The City of Luxembourg provides podcast files. That way, you can learn wherever and whenever you want, with the MP3, iTunes or XML formats available.

Finally, it's important to remember that if you want to gain Luxembourg nationality, according to the Law of 23 October 2008, you'll be asked to pass a test of spoken Luxembourgish, organized by the National Language Institute.
