If one has to draw inspiration from a country in order to develop one’s way of life, better that it be one of the happiest in the world. Let us focus on Denmark and its concept of “hygge”, or how to enjoy life in a simple manner.
Hygge, pronounced “hoo-gah”, is a Danish art of living that combines a warm interior with simple moments of daily life to be enjoyed alone, between friends or together with the family. Hygge is a philosophy of life, a feeling of well-being connected to a friendly atmosphere. This state of mind goes hand in hand with an open interior, or if there is not enough space, a small area that you have prepared. No need to spend money on decoration, the accessories you have now will do the trick: plaids, soft cushions, scented candles, a library of your favourite books, carpets. In this way, your interior will be ready to welcome your family and/or friends in a warm atmosphere during these long winter evenings.
Enjoying life also means enjoying the present moment, settling down, taking the time to enjoy a hot drink, and why not by the fireplace (that only happens in the movies)? If there is no chimney, a stove or a heater will do the trick. Enjoying life also means learning to disconnect the devices that have invaded our daily lives (smartphone, tablet, etc.) and that steal a lot of our time, or rather make us waste our precious time.
Like all the arts of living, hygge is to be practised: it is not just a state of mind. Enthusiasts of Danish life make themselves comfortable. To do this, they opt for a comfortable outfit, pyjamas or or a sweater and big woollen socks. The kitchen also holds a special place in this Nordic trend. On the menu, the preparation of small or sweet dishes that will undoubtedly delight your guests. As we have described it, hygge seems more adapted to the winter but it can very well apply in summer: long walks, bike rides, lunch on the terrace, family picnics or barbecues with friends or colleagues.
Some cultures are already inspired by this way of life even if they only partially translate the concept, such as the Dutch with their concept of gezellig or the French with cocooning. All you need do now is try it out and see the happy side of life in total simplicity. Adopt, then, the hygge attitude !
